Not family-friendly

I’ve grown up in the area and have fond memories of this park as a child. But visiting as a parent was very different. We went on a Friday night in the summertime with friends, hoping our combined total of four children under the age of 12 would be able to play while we visited. The park doubles as a venue, so there was a baseball game going on next door and a musical revue in the amphitheater. An arts festival was going on across the river, too, so the place was busy. What troubled us was that it was packed with teenagers. Which is great - they need a safe spot to hang out, and Roseburg is sadly lacking for them - but these kids made the park horribly unfriendly for younger ones. They were rough, their pranks on each other would sometimes affect the young ones near them, their foul language was an education, their PDA was distracting, and their fashion choices included tees with slogans I really didn’t want my kids to read. They crowded the playground, making it hard for the littles to play, taking the swings (even the baby ones). As parents, we had a hard time keeping an eye on what was going on. The visibility at this park isn’t great, and there are no four-person tables along the playground’s edge, so our group was always divided. We were on high-alert for the homeless folks wandering through, raiding the trash cans, too. (It’s a perennial problem at Stewart Park.). The chief of police wandered through, greeting families and handing out badge stickers to the kids, which was great, but there was nothing he could do to improve the experience, and we soon left.

Suspicious Activity at the Duck Pond by Fred Meyer

HEADS UP****Went to the Duck Pond to watch the ducks during a break. A man with a beane, black coat Tshirt, jeans and OPEN CARRY approached my car, knocked on the window, and rudely asked me to roll the window down. I said no through the locked door and glass, driving off after pointing at the clock. ***HEADS UP

Love this park

Great for anything. Well-maintained paved trail, duck pond, grocery nearby, dog cleanup bags provided, and quite scenic as it extends for a few miles along the river to the downtown area. I walk my dog here and we love it.

Duck pond

Duck pond. Don't take your family down there the entire place is filled with homeless and their garbage. Disgusting! Is this really what we have allowed our town to become??? I am ashamed to be an Oregonian, I'm ashamed of our town and ashamed of the people that have allowed this to happen.
