Founded in 1852, Buena Vista Ferry is one of the oldest continuous operating ferries in the state. The current ferry has been in continuous operation since 1955 providing daily shuttle service to the public, including motorized vehicles, from April through October each year. Today, two of the three remaining Willamette River ferries still inoperation are both in Marion County – Wheatland and Buena Vista.

The information provided by TripAdvisor is incorrect. Hours of operation are 7 to 5:30 seven days a week. Not 7 to 7 please correct the misrepresented time!

The Independence Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. Beautiful location right on the Willamette River. Safe easy parking. Clean clean rooms. Quiet. Nice bar & restaurant. Great breakfast. Friendly staff. Short stroll to the quaint downtown. And tiny cupcakes in the lobby!

How do you ride a bicycle across a river?
You don't! You take the ferry instead. As part of an Eclipse Viewing Trip, my friends and I rode a long loop around Independence, Oregon (a fantastic little town to visit). (Yes, I know the Great American Eclipse was in 2017 - but TripAdvisor won't let me go back that far...). At one point we crossed the Willamette on a bridge, and of course we had to come back over the river to complete the loop. That's where the Ferry came in.This cute little electric ferry (yes, electric!) runs across the river, and it's 100% friendly to bicycles. The three of us loaded into the ferry with a few cars, and hummed our way quietly across the river, with the ferry taking its power via a trolley riding overhead wires. Submerged cables kept the ferry on course in spite of the river current, and the trip was completed quickly. It was a fun break from pedaling. If you are on two wheels in the area, don't hesitate to include this ferry in your plans.
