Bare Bones
We have stayed here many times, and it hasn’t changed much over the years. It is a bare bones motel, the rooms are very dated, threadbare linens. This time we couldn’t use the heater because it kept kicking on and off all night and it sounded like a Jake brake on a Mack truck. The blow dryer was broken and the dumpster outside the door was stinkin to high heaven. But we always come back because we love to go crabbing on the public docks and this place is convenient and has facilities to cook our catch. The area is quite depressed; most of the restaurants have closed down, and Basin tackle is out of business. Sad. Millers by the Cove restaurant across the street is excellent! Best steamers I’ve ever had!

Clean, Peaceful, and Close to Nature
We enjoyed our stay at Captain John's in Charleston. Our tidy, cozy room included all the amenities we needed for a two-night stay. There's even a fish-cleaning station and dining room options for guests who've been crabbing or digging for clams. Although breakfast wasn't technically included our booking, we put together a light breakfast of complimentary pastries, fruit, and coffee in the bright, cheerful reception area. Charleston couldn't be more convenient to Sunset Bay, Shore Acres, and Cape Arago State Parks and South Slough National Estuarine Reserve.

Budget-friendly
Cute, older motel. Our room was spacious and the king bed was comfy. Everything worked and the room was neat and tidy. Front desk staff were friendly. Not a lot of good restaurant choices, but we did find one that was okay. The area seemed a little depressed to me.

Slim pickings in Charleston and this one isn’t great!
I’d love to give this motel a better rating but honestly there were so many things that were terrible. First, the most important, the beds need replaced, both of ours sagged so bad in the middle and hurt our backs. Next, there is no room service so don’t plan on getting your beds made or fresh towels, garbage removed, etc. The worst part was our room 122 was right next to the dumpster which reeked of rotting fish from the nearby cleaning station. We couldn’t even keep our windows or door open or enjoy the patio in the evenings. Overall, wouldn’t recommend to friends and family or stay there again.
