This was our 3rd trip on a Scenic Railroad. We did Royal Gorge in Colorado and Verde Canyon in Arizona. Unfortunately, compared to them, it was unremarkable. Not to say it wasn’t fun, it’s just that the scenery wasn’t as great as I had hoped for. Most the trip was spent looking at dense foliage. Right near the end of the outbound trip it opened up to the Nehalem River and bay. The narrator on the trip was great. He was highly knowledgeable and informative. I felt his passion for the job. I loved the steam engine and historic train cars. The history was interesting, the scenery was not.
What an amazing experience! Absolutely beautiful scenery, and a fun way to see the coast! We left from Rockaway Beach and rode to Garibaldi! When you book your tickets, you have a choice to do return ride with 30 minutes, or return in 2.5 hours- we originally planned to spend 2.5 hours in Garibaldi, but after arriving to the town, realized there wasn’t much to do and hopped on the train back within the 30 mins. Would 10/10 recommend the open cart if weather permits!
You received what they advertised. Having done other scenic, trains, and other areas of the country, I was a bit disappointed in this one was not very impressed. However, if this was your first train ride and you wanted to see the coast, it’s a great way to do it. The boarding in both towns was somewhat confusing. The ride was OK the time we had to spend in the next town was very rushed by the time you got off the train, which had no bathrooms and stood in line to use the bathrooms at the beach in the town. When we arrived. It was time to get back on the train in my opinion the scenery was not that great I could have seen more on my own. I felt like I wasted a few hours of my day in doing this experience.

We rode the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad for the 9:00 a.m. Garibaldi Days Parade train, and it was a great experience! We chose seats in the table car so we could enjoy the coffee and pastries we picked up from a bakery in Rockaway Beach before boarding. Boarding was quick and easy, and since the train wasn’t full that morning, we were able to choose our seats. We had originally booked the 2:00 p.m. return trip, but my son wanted to head back earlier. Thankfully, there was room on the noon train, and the staff let us switch. If you think you may need to change your return time, I’d recommend calling ahead to see if there’s space available. The train runs between Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi, and I believe it also goes to Wheeler on some trips. The steam locomotive was really neat to see, and my son absolutely loved it. We also picked up souvenir engineer hats for $20, which made a fun keepsake. This is a great activity for families with kids who love trains, or for anyone who wants a relaxing way to travel between Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi without having to drive. We’d definitely do it again!
