Hilgard Junction State Recreation Area offers camping and daytime activities amongst the cottonwood and ponderosa pine. Some of the activities include picnicking, fishing, swimming, viewing scenery and viewing interpretive exhibits.
Hilgard Junction features a campground and picnic area. The campground has an RV dump station.
While camping at the park, you can see ruts of the historic Oregon Trail at the nearby Blue Mountain Crossing Interpretive park, explore miles of open road in the national forest, or hop over to LaGrande and stock up on groceries, have a meal or partake in community events.
Vital stats: The park is open March – November. The campground offers 18 primitive sites (maximum site 30 feet).
: Climate in Eastern Oregon varies greatly with elevation. The higher elevations experience colder temperatures and higher precipitation than the lower elevations. The region is much more arid and experiences greater temperature variations than western Oregon. Much of Eastern Oregon is considered high desert, where in some areas annual precipitation is less than 10 inches. Summer temperatures often reach 90 degrees in the lower elevations. Winters can be bitterly cold here, although there is little humidity. The mountains can receive heavy snowfall. If visiting the region during the summer months be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms and chilly evening temperatures. Snow may be encountered on high country trails throughout the summer months.
Location: Hilgard Junction State Park is located in northeast Oregon, next to Interstate 84 at its intersection with Highway 244, near the Grande Ronde River and 8 miles west of LaGrande.
