Something’s Brewing in Redmond

December 27, 2013 (Updated July 30, 2014)

Just north of Bend, the little town of Redmond shares the same high desert climate, 300-plus days of sunshine per year, outdoor culture and, it appears, a love of good beer. Redmond’s craft brew scene is growing exponentially with three established breweries and three in various stages of development. Get a taste of Redmond from these fine breweries.

Founded in 1994, Cascade Lakes Brewing Company was one of the state’s first craft breweries and Redmond’s first. Visit the 7th Street Brew House in Redmond and the Cascade Lakes Lodge in Bend. Cyclops IPA, Monkey Face Porter and Blond Bomb Shell are among their signature brews.

Smith Rock Brewing, opened in fall of 2012, has a fun pub atmosphere and a tasty food menu. You can always find one of its beers on tap as well as seven guest taps. Look for Smith Rock’s two Black Ales, the Misery Ridge and Morning Glory IPAs, oatmeal cream ale, Byggvir’s Hammer Imperial Red and a dozen other signature brews.

Phat Matt’s Brewing Company has been brewing since 2011 and offers an IPA, a kolsch and a red. Phat Matt’s doesn’t have a tasting room, but you can find their beers at restaurants and festivals around the region. Redmond’s The Pig and Pound Public House usually has one on tap.

Shade Tree Brewing has been called “one of Central Oregon’s least-known brewing operations” by organizers of Central Oregon’s Beer Week. The nano-brewery has been turning out great beers for a couple of years and is rumored to be looking for a new location. Look for Shade Tree at Oregon beer festivals and stay tuned.

You’ll have hold your horses to get a taste of Wild Ride Brewing Company. The brand new brewery is busy building a tasting room and production facility in the former Parr Lumber warehouse building in downtown Redmond and hopes to be pouring in early 2014.
