Where the Wind Blows: the Gorge

Where The Wind Blows continues eastward as four professional female kiteboarders chase wind along the Columbia River Gorge. The girls display their diverse skill set as conditions proved tough; gusty winds and fierce currents kept the ladies on edge. Being a well-rounded kiteboarder requires performing well in all conditions. With creative filming by Moxy International, Colleen, Sensi,… More

We’ll be visiting Oregon in August and driving from Portland to Hood River one day, and then to Bend the next day. What would be the best way to experience Mt. Hood? Is there any way to get to the snow in that period of time?

The best way to experience Mount Hood, especially if you want to get up close to some snow, is to visit Timberline Lodge. You won't get any closer to the mountain. They do a great lunch buffet, for a very reasonable price using many local ingredients. Take a ride up on the ski lift to the Palmer Snowfield, where you can play in the snow year round, even in August. You may also consider making a stop at Trillium Lake on your way to Bend,... More

Life Lived Well in Garibaldi

For decades, sun, surf and fun on the beach has drawn vacationers to Garibaldi. The coastal town is the perfect getaway to slow down, poke around and find a bit of wind-blown magic. At four stories tall, the "Big G" on the hill is hard to miss. The white letter has towered over Garibaldi since 1929. Visitors head to… More

In case of rain, what are some indoor activities between Cannon Beach to Yachats?

Cannon Beach offers great shopping and art galleries, most within the two block downtown area. Mo's offers casual dining with an ocean view and Wayfarer Restaurant offers more upscale dining with views. One of my favorite things for a rainy day is a visit to Icefire Glassworks in midtown Cannon Beach where you can often watch glassblowers at work. Other indoor attractions include the Cannon Beach History Center and live theater at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse. As you travel south, you could consider a stop... More

Fat Bike Oregon’s Central Coast: Otter Rock Ride

Visually captivating scenes are around every corner of this coastal ride. In one afternoon we rode from watching whales from a cliff to exploring a lighthouse to discovering quiet surf breaks. More

Fat Bike Oregon’s Central Coast: Newport to Yachats

We pedaled down Highway 101, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, and climbed over the Newport Bridge, taking in a spectacular view from the top of the bridge. Finishing our warm-up on the road, we took a right turn into South Beach State Park and made our way to the sand along a paved path. Once on the beach, we pointed our fat tires south to start our journey down the shoreline. More

Banana Belt Loop

10Mi, Moderate
The words “banana belt” and “Oregon” don’t necessarily go together instinctively. And yet, the South Coast is a place where you can rely on warmer temperatures than the rest of the state during those dark, wet months when you may not even want to ride at all. So head to the southwest corner of the state – the beach is warmer here in the winter, it’s just as nice during the summer, it’s much less crowded than the northern stretches… and thanks to Oregon’s all-beaches-are-public... Florence Dune Exploration

24Mi, Moderate
Used to be, the only option for “riding the dunes” along the Oregon Coast was loud, fast and fairly expensive – a dune buggy or other motorized off-highway vehicle (OHV). But now, thanks to fat tires and strong legs, you can take on some serious sand riding without making any noise – except maybe either the occasional exhilarated “woot woot!” or possibly gasping for breath as you make your way up a big one.The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is one of the highlights of... Fort Stevens Fat Bike Route

15Mi, Moderate
Oregon’s north coast is where much of the beach action is for tourists. You’ve got rugged headlands here, wide-open expanses of sand there, fun beach towns all along the way – and a state population base centered in Portland and the Willamette Valley to come visit. Tillamook, Seaside and Cannon Beach are epicenters, but at the northwest corner of the state there’s a stretch that combines the coast’s legendary beauty with less dense development and a visual sweep of Oregon history. And you can see the... Newport to Yachats

28Mi, Moderate
This unique route lets you explore a spectacular stretch of central Oregon Coast at a leisurely pace, spending most of your time on the beach, not the road. When you do hit the highway, it’s to cross a pair of graceful, picturesque bridges – or to find the brewpub at the end of this route, for a cold beverage that properly celebrates your adventure of putting in 28 miles on the bike.First, let’s talk logistics: Between the distance and the likelihood of a strong breeze,... Oregon Gravel Riding: Get Off Your Asphalt

If cycling through Oregon isn’t already considered an extreme sport, riding its gravel roads should be. With the Oregon Coast Gravel Epic gaining popularity each year, many of us are curious why anyone in their right mind would want to engage in a sport called an “abomination” by even its most avid proponents. Well, why not? Sure, it's grueling, dirty and possibly tire-destroying... but there are many reasons to give gravel riding a spin — and just as many riding tips to keep in mind for the... More

Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail: Part 4

There were so many moments on the trail where I’d wanted to give up. There were times that were miserable, challenging, boring. But thankfully I’d had enough foresight to know how disappointed and regretful I would have been if I’d given up. More

Tygh Watershed

22Mi, Challenging
Itching for a chance to get off the road, but not feeling single-track-y? Gravel routes offer that sweet spot between cars whizzing by and technical terrain that takes advanced skills. On this rugged but non-technical route, you’ll get that off-road buzz on jeep trails and double-track – oh, and mind-blowing views of majestic Mount Hood, too. From the community of Tygh Valley, drive to the end of Shadybrook Road, which heads northwest from town toward the mountain. When it ends, hop on your bike and... More

In my research on Oregon, over the last couple of years; I came across a story about one of the coastal sites, setting out glass globes...hiding them like easter eggs. Where does this take place, or does it anymore?

You're definitely thinking of Lincoln City, where they set out more than 2,000 colorful blown glass "floats" between October and May. The program began in 1999, to celebrate the millennium, and now the "Float Fairies" are at work every year. The floats are modeled on the traditional Japanese blown glass fishing floats, in green and blue, that used to wash up on these beaches. They've expanded the program to include a "blow your own" glass foundry, and local galleries also specialize in these floats. Happy... More

The Cloud Girls

Summer begins this week and that means Oregon’s forest fire season won’t be far behind. Not too many decades ago, high adventure in the outdoors meant service, duty and responsibility to protect Oregon’s forests from catastrophic fire. This week, we learn about the Tillamook State Forest where women once ‘manned’ fire lookout towers and earned the nickname,… More
