Oregon Road Trip Mix Tape

"Roll On, Columbia" Woody Guthrie   In 1941 guitar-pickin’ Woody Guthrie rambled around the Pacific Northwest, where he was inspired to compose a number of famous tunes. He compiled these songs on a record called “The Columbia River Collection.” The rollicking number “Roll On, Columbia” celebrates the great river snaking its way along Oregon’s northern border. https://open.spotify.com/track/4TigadiqmHjwBfbBtJqUp1 "Roll On, Columbia" Woody Guthrie   In 1941 guitar-pickin’ Woody Guthrie rambled around the Pacific Northwest, where he was inspired to compose a number of famous tunes. I will be visiting Southern Oregon in March. Is this a good time to go mushroom foraging?

Hi Emily, I gather that you’re after morels, which are this region’s signature springtime mushrooms. The actual season depends largely on elevation. If we get some warm weather in February (50s), which is not uncommon, there can be early flushes of mushrooms in March, particularly in areas burned over by forest fire the previous year. The picking starts to accelerate in April at lower elevations, around 1,000 to 2,000 feet, but the main crop comes in May out of the region’s mountains. You could get... More

How do you catch razor clams?

ODFW has a lot of good info- http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/shellfish/razorclams/index.asp Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA4D2ERtTdo Sometimes you will see those "shows" on their own, especially right at low tide. I like to stomp my feet as I walk in about a ten foot circle and then walk back over my tracks and look for shows. As the stomping scares the clam it will retract and cause a show. Here's one of my blogs- http://www.ifish.net/board/blog.php?b=23&a=3956 Get to the beach one to two hours before low tide. Minus tides... More

We have 3 days in Portland and want to see art exhibits, theater and explore the neighborhoods. What do you suggest? -Joanne

I recommend a visit the Portland Art Museum to start!  Portland also has a ballet, opera, and many theater options: http://www.portlandtheatre.com/calendar/index.php Most of these cultural offerings are in Downtown Portland.  Adjacent is Portland's Pearl District, a modern artsy neighborhood.  I would also recommend visiting the Mississippi Avenue, Alberta St., Hawthorne Blvd, and Nob Hill neighborhoods. What are the best trails in Southern Oregon?

Greetings from Southern Oregon, Our outdoors writers always tout that the Pacific Crest Trail runs through our region, through the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Soda Mountain Wilderness and Sky Lakes Wilderness. Of course, those areas are most popular for longer, overnight treks. If you want a relatively easy day hike, consider locals’ favorite, the Table Rocks. While the trail to the top of these mesas cuts through the region’s typical, oak-savannah flora, the view from the top of these distinctive geographic and geologic  features is unsurpassed:... More

Carless: Canada to the Coast

Is this guy with you ladies?" This comes from the bartender at Clyde Common. He gestures at Andrew, who has just grabbed the vacant stool next to me. The bartender looks at me as if to say, I'll give him the heave-ho if you want. This makes me laugh. Not only because Andrew is about six-foot-four, but because he's one of the nicest guys I know. After all, he's Canadian. More

What is the best time of year to visit the Rogue-Umpqua Byway to see the waterfalls?

Greetings from Southern Oregon, The most commonly recommended time to travel the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway is June through October, mainly to ensure clear roads, fair weather and more daylight hours. Volumes of water running in the falls largely depend on wintertime precipitation. We’re off to a good start for this year, considering the flood warnings throughout Southern Oregon several weeks ago. And Crater Lake started seeing enough snow in October to close some roads. You could plan your trip in mid- to late spring, but... More

What are the must-see places in Salem?

Salem is a good city to stay in because it is a central location to all sorts of places to visit in Oregon.  It is also the capital so if you want, you can visit our state's capital building located in downtown Salem.  Inside the building are murals painted depicting our state history.  Outside are sculptures on the grounds and one on top of the building that is covered in gold leaf and represents Oregon's first settlers.  In 1984, school children raised the $38,000 to... Silk by Pho Van

Silk has come a long way. Since 2002, Silk, previously named, Pho Van Bistro was created to be an extension of our casual eastside location, Pho Van (phovanrestaurant.com). Pho Van Bistro began as a new concept for us offering Vietnamese cuisine beyond the casual noodle soups and grill fare. Attention to detail was a priority to us. What transpired was an upscale restaurant that expressed our personal style, culture, service, and above all, our interpretation of traditional Vietnamese flavors, all in a friendly and welcoming... What are some fun things to do in the Roseburg area? We like museums, scenic drives and local attractions. -Terry L.

Perhaps the most well-known attraction in the Roseburg area is Wildlife Safari, a few miles away in the smaller town of Winston. Speaking from personal experience, this is fun for kids and adults alike. Here’s a story from the Mail Tribune newspaper’s Joy magazine about it: http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070620/JOY/706200302&cid=sitesearch There’s also the Douglas County Museum of Natural and Cultural History. And you’re very close to the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, which as the name implies is one of the most scenic drives in the region, with numerous waterfalls... More
