Riding the Truly Epic North Umpqua Trail

Since I first heard of it, I’ve wanted to explore this 79-mile trail winding through the Umpqua National Forest between Diamond Lake and Roseburg. Completed in 1997, the trail follows the high ridgeline above the river, snakes through towering forests of hemlock, fir and pine, and skirts multiple waterfalls as it follows the shining rapids of the river. How We Circumnavigated the Three Sisters

For the last couple years, I have wanted to complete the Three Sisters circumnavigation. The trail is legendary among backpackers, just as the namesake mountains are iconic in Central Oregon. Finally my dad and I were able to schedule the trip for summer 2018. More

How to Take Amazing Photos of Your Oregon Travels

I’ve been a park ranger in Oregon for 12 years, stationed everywhere from the Oregon Dunes and Crater Lake National Park to the Deschutes National Forest and Rogue Wild and Scenic River. No matter where I work, visitors share one thing in common — they want to take the best possible photos. There’s just one downside to that: Some photos are so iconic that everyone wants to take them, and they end up all looking the same More

A Trip Into “Wild Wild Country”

Curious travelers planning an adventure to this wild pocket of the Pacific Northwest should pack boots and cowboy hats — you’ll need both while exploring this arid side of the Cascades. The region is rich in history (hello, prehistoric fossil beds) and also offers incredible opportunities to soak up the high-desert sunshine, something that newcomers might not believe exists here in Oregon. Here are the top stops from my weekend road trip. More

Get Ready for the Total Solar Eclipse in 2017

One of nature’s most incredible — and rarest — sights is coming to Oregon. On August 21, 2017, the state will be treated to a total solar eclipse, a rare celestial event in which the moon passes in front of the sun and completely blocks its light, briefly turning daytime into twilight. Mark your calendar now, because the next opportunity to view a total solar eclipse from Oregon won’t occur for nearly 100 years. More

Ways to Help During Oregon Wildfires

Called a "once-in-a-generation event" by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, the wildfires of September 2020 have swept through some 300,000 acres of the state, forcing thousands to evacuate as winds spread embers and smoke through western Oregon. Gov. Brown said this could be the greatest loss of human lives and property due to wildfire in our state’s history. More

Go Skateboarding In Oregon

The history of Oregon skateboarding goes deep. Some would say that it started 30 years ago under the Burnside Bridge with a crew of DIY Portland skateboarders. It was on Halloween night of 1990, when a tight-knit group of friends, seeking a sheltered spot to skate, started unloading bags of concrete and building transitions to skate on the bridge columns.   In the process, these skaters spawned a skatepark building boom that continues to this day. The timing was fortuitous as one of the biggest impediments... More

Pup in Tow on the Painted Hills Scenic Bikeway

Whirring bicycle wheels and the steady gnawing of puppy teeth against a rawhide bone merge into a peaceful rhythm as I pedal down the two-lane highway, just a handful of miles outside Mitchell. I’m exploring the Painted Hills Scenic Bikeway, Oregon’s newest addition to its official bicycle-friendly routes. Located in Eastern Oregon, the state’s 15th Scenic Bikeway connects the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument over 161 miles and tops the state’s total bikeway network to more than 1,000 miles. To... More

Trekking the Cascading Rivers Scenic Bikeway

After two days of riding alongside cars, the start of the Cascading Rivers Scenic Bikeway felt almost eerily quiet. The tall pines cast long shadows across the road, blocking the sun from beating down on us for most of the day. Bright pink foxgloves and purple lupine lined the roads, escorting us along the gradual uphill. More
