High Expectations, Poor results
I had high expectations of the Nines, as it is spoken of in whispers when one asks about hotels in Portland, Oregon. Unfortunately I found a dressed up 3 star courtyard hotel with average service. Would stay at one of the Kimpton hotels in the future. I spent one night at the Nines in a Deluxe King room booked through American Express FHR at $359 per night. Upon checkin at noon (early checkin provided if available by AMEX) I was informed there would be up to a 45 minute wait and they would text me when the room was ready. So, I went to Urban Fare, their restaurant. At the restaurant the brunch menu has few lunch options. I asked for a lunch menu, and was told there wasn’t one. Given that is called a steakhouse, I asked if there was a steak menu. The bartender told me “yes, there was but we are not supposed to give it out until asked”...you can order anything off the center list (but then no sides or accompaniments). I ended up with a bland filet mignon with fries and ketchup. 1.5 hours later, with no text from the front desk, I went back to try again. While I was standing there, two rooms were given to another guest without issue. Without apology, I was made to wait another 10 minutes while they found me a room, with the statement that they were unable to accommodate the FHR upgrade. Upon reaching the room, I discovered a postage stamp sized room with a tiny bathroom and a shower, worthy of a trip to NYC and at NYC prices. So much for a “Deluxe King” room. Music was blaring and thumping from a concert around the corner of the hotel, no chance for a power nap. Would recommend an inner courtyard room for future. No turndown service was performed that night while I was out, although I did receive a small tray of confections tucked into the seeming only available remaining spot in the tiny room. A disappointing result for so much hype.
Great Staff and Location
I would like to preface this review by saying that overall our experience was good and that our opinions were personal. The staff, especially David was awesome and really helpful. the room amenities however were lackluster for a hotel such as the Nines. The bed was too firm, no in room coffee and you have to share the elevator with people who are going to the roof top bar. Overall, the staff made the experience and room quality much better. Great location in PDX.
Our go to Portland Hotel
We love the location and amenities of this hotel. Nice restaurants, rooms, a great club in the concierge level. Tried lots of hotels in the area and this one keeps us coming back. When you drive up or enter the building the valet team is outstanding! Front desk staff all 3 times I have stayed here have been “flat” at best. Probably the least impressive functions of the hotel are the front desk staff members and the concierge. Not very helpful, engaging or service oriented.
Best stay ever!
Wow! I had the most incredible stay at The Nines! The room was beautiful and the service was amazing! Everything was clean and comfortable. We stayed two nights and met so many wonderful people who took such good care of us. Shout out to Paul, Pai, Patrick, Katrina, Kristin, Rachel, David, Anandi, Maleina, Blanca, Megan, Rana, Tiffany, Bradley, Alyssa, and Agnes! Because of you all I will come back over and over again! Thank you for the wonderful memories!!! Raelyn
Destination location in Portland!
The location is outstanding to downtown, close to attractions, shopping and great eats! The premiere location to meet friends and the Departure lounge is outstanding for quality food and views. The Urban Farmer is one of the best restaurants in Portland with local specialties full of organic options.
