Heck of a Heathman
Wonderful stay in Portland made possible by a stay at the Heathman. I and my friend arrived early and were given a room (even at 11 am). They hotel sports an amazing library and a perfect place to relax with vintage charm. The room was a bit small for two people (not a suite). I do appreciate local beer served at 4 pm each afternoon. We didn't try the Headwaters (hotel restaurant, which is highly rated), but the concierge gave us good recommendations to eat in the area, as well as how to get to and from (walking or taking the MAX train). Getting to hotel from PDX was easy on the train, getting off at Pioneer Square. Overall, the staff were nice (the men). I thought the female concierge was terse, if not snooty. She seemed that way to all the guests: not a good.
Pathetic Service and Secret Charges
I was charged a resort fee after the stay which I was not aware of earlier. Why cant you just charge it at the time of booking and be transparent? Noting it in small text is not going to do anyone any good. Just unhappy customers. The lady who checked me in didn't even smile. Did not offer me any check-in beer while my colleagues who were checked in by someone else were offered beer. Whenever I called the front desk, it took at least 5-10 minutes before someone picked up. I also had to call the restaurant to connect me to front desk because no one picked up. Ridiculous service for an apparent 4.5 star hotel. I expect better when I'm paying through my nose.
Centrally located and beautiful building (nice common space with library) but one of the smallest rooms (sans Europe) in which we’ve ever stayed. There was one drawer in one bedside table and no shelves anywhere. When I asked the front desk if this was the norm for their rooms, he basically blew me off so am guessing we were given the mini room with no view at a premium price. We were already questioning the value but when you add $50 per night for parking, the answer was clear...we will not return.
