Convenient, comfortable, classic
We enjoyed three nights at Lara House over the New Year holiday. We’ve stayed at a number of B&B’s and Air B&B’s over the years, but this one comes out near the top. It’s right next to Drake Park and just two blocks to downtown. The Lara house is a former mansion built in 1910. As such it has a roomy living/dining room area for guests and five nicely appointed and comfortable rooms. The hostesses were friendly and helpful (they have excellent recommendations on the local food scene); the breakfasts were nice; and we enjoyed the wine and beer happy hour from 5:00-7:00 pm. Our only noted downsides are that the TVs in the rooms are dated and the wifi dropped on us occasionally, but those are very minor in the big picture of a very relaxing and convenient place to stay at a reasonable price with a killer location. We’ll be back!
Great Service from the two owners
I had the perfect opportunity to be the only guest mid-week in December for two nights. It was great to have the place alone as I was on a work related trip and did not need distractions. Best part of this B&B is the home is an old historical landmark and is 1 block down and 1 block over from downtown. Perfect walking distance to the best pubs, restaurants and shops in downtown Bend. The old Mill is not too far, it can be walked too if you have 20-30 minutes. The breakfast served were well planned for and fresh. The nightly wine/beer hour - 5-6 was a plus. I had an opportunity to speak to one of the owners as I had the place to myself. They will give you space if you need it or you can feel free to chat with the owners. They provided great recommendations for restaurants within walking distance. Megan was the main person I saw over the two day visit. She was great. I'll return with my wife when we can spend personal time in Bend.
Great potential but needs more attention to details
First the positives. It is in a lovely neighborhood and is perfect for downtown Bend. It is a few short blocks to multiple restaurants, Drake Park, riverfront trail, etc. Owners are pleasant and helpful. Our room was large and had a sizable bathroom with two sinks and lovely shower. The wifi needs help. The owners know it doesn't work in one of the rooms and one indicated it "usually" works in the common area. We wanted to check restaurant reviews and look up hiking options and were unable to do so even when we were in the common areas. This is a problem that can be fixed and owners have chosen not to. The toilet in our room filled and emptied with water about every 5 minutes. It made it hard to get to sleep. We finally shut the water off until morning. When we told the owner, she indicated you have to wiggle the handle. (We had done that a couple times but it is a reoccurring problem.) Again, something that needs a permanent fix. Finally, there was a heavy layer of dust on the tops of the vanity drawers and the trim on the front of the cabinet. So, there is much to like about Lara's but much greater attention to detail is needed when paying $280 a night. Breakfast was tasty.
Best of the Best in Bend
What can I add that hasn't already been said. The Lara House is a wonderful place to stay in Bend. There are many fine restaurants within a short walk. The common area is very inviting to use in the evening. The breakfast is great. And did I mention the hosts, they are great too.
Excellent! Very comfy. Love the front porch especially. Beds are comfortable with luxurious linens. Very nice people. Old Bend is a lush and green oasis in the middle of the high desert. Highly recommended
