Long an abundant homeland for native tribes and later a productive farming and logging locale, this region’s lush landscape is still a powerful draw. It all feels a bit like a local’s secret, where… More

Finding The Hidden Treasure of Oregon’s Coast

Oregon's spectacular coastline is haunted by tales of ghastly shipwrecks, haunted light houses, and tall tales of treasure stashed away never to be found again. Some of those stories center on Neahkahnie Mountain, which just lies north of the coastal hamlet of Mazanita. A local Native American legend tells of several ships that wrecked nearby… More

Where Tribal Stories Come to Life

Sponsored
This is my family’s first visit to Tamástslikt Cultural Institute (pronounced Tah-must-slickt) near Pendleton. We’ve driven through the same lands crossed by Lewis and Clark, waves of traders, 19th century Christian missionaries and Oregon Trail pioneers. But it wasn’t their land. These are lands that have belonged to the Columbia Plateau tribes for more than 10,000 years. I’ve brought my kids here to learn of these cultures, including the Umatilla, Cayuse and Walla Walla peoples. More

The Case of the Missing Canoes

Shirod Younker’s passion for canoes began early. Growing up near Coos Bay in the ’70s and ’80s, he recalls that his family had “many canoes and no rules.” His Coos and Coquille Native American father and Filipino mother encouraged him and his two siblings to explore the South Slough estuary, which had long been home… More

Keep Tradition Alive at Barbey Maritime Center

Many folks tend to think of Oregon history in terms of the rough and ready pioneer life that meant hardship and great adventure in the early 1800s, when covered wagons crossed the country to reach the Willamette Valley. The Wallowas

In the Wallowas, you can look down from an alpine summit and see the high desert of Indian country roll out in front of you in one direction, and then turn around and see past Hells Canyon into the next state, and some say all the way past it to the next one after that. You can hike or ride a horse to the summit, but the fastest way to the top is the gondola that rises 3,700 feet from Wallowa Lake Village to the... More
