How to Ride the Old West Scenic Bikeway in Five Days

There’s a little-known secret about cycling in Oregon: Some of the best riding in the state isn’t in Portland or even along the Pacific Coast. You have to cross the Cascade Mountains and head into the open country of Eastern Oregon, where cows in the road constitute a traffic jam, and where the impressive scenery shifts between ponderosa pines and basalt rock. Kam Wah Chung

If you know where to look across Oregon's vast high desert landscape, there are powerful human stories found in small, quiet places. This week, we go to a "time capsule" of sorts in Eastern Oregon's John Day, where a unique and memorable chapter of the Oregon story comes to life. There is a timeless feeling… More

John Day Fossil Beds

This week I took a colorful hike through time through one of Oregon's most spectacular landscapes - the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. From its headwaters in the Blue Mountains to its salmon-rich confluence with the grand Columbia more than 225 miles away, the John Day River twists, turns, and carves a path through… More

The Hidden History of Kam Wah Chung

From the outside it doesn’t look like much. Given its location,  standing alone in a city park in the small eastern Oregon town of John Day, the stout little structure might be mistaken for some kind of shuttered concession stand—a place to buy hot dogs and soft drinks in summer, when the park swimming pool is open. Except for the hand-lettered sign overhead saying Kam Wah Chung & Co., and the fact that its address is on Canton Street, you’d never guess that this building— just blocks from the Grant County... Family Weekend at the John Day Fossil Beds

It is 10 o’clock at night. I am standing outside in the dark, holding a three-year-old. It’s way past his bedtime. We are waiting for a turn to look at Saturn’s rings through a telescope. “Mama, I have to pee.” Of course. But at least he told me before the fact. We leave our place… More

Three Days in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness

It’s safe to say we were here to explore, to savor each moment and to celebrate the freedom of the wilderness. We set off with our dog Riggins late in the afternoon toward Slide Lake. The trail turned south, traversing the eastern side of the ridge and offering views of aptly named Slide Mountain, with numerous avalanche paths leaving scars down its face. Above, basalt columns stood in various states of toppling into each other. More
