Historic Canyonville

National Geographic Geotourism Location
Located 98 miles from the California border, Canyonville is the third-oldest city in Oregon. Nestled at the base of one of the most difficult passes in the Applegate Trail, it was a natural stopping point. Crossing the Applegate Trail was unbelievably difficult, and the services of the town were critical to the survival of the pioneers. Striking geography, the quaint, historic downtown and an ideal climate makes Canyonville an appealing place to this day. Take the walking tour, beginning at the Applegate Trail Informational Kiosk... Sumpter Valley Railroad

Nearly all of today's excursion and museum railroads operate on abandoned rights-of-way. The Sumpter Valley Railway, located 26 miles southwest of Baker City Oregon, on U.S. Highway 7, has a unique characteristic over all of these railroads. We have built the railroad ourselves. Although the road bed and track is mostly on original Sumpter Valley Railway right-of-way, the original track was scrapped in 1947, and nearly all of the original road bed had eroded away. With an all volunteer work force, the SVRy has rebuilt... More

Crescent Creek Cottages

National Geographic Geotourism Location
Crescent Creek Cottages was built in the 1910s by the workers building the railroad. Crescent Lake was a stop on the railroad, and a town was born. The cottages have been maintained for almost 100 years. Railroad employees still come to stay at the cottages when they are working on the lines. The cottages have been only minimally upgraded over the years, to keep their charming rustic atmosphere, but they do have modern conveniences. Crescent Creek is just feet from the back door of each... More

Maupin lies in the rainshadow of the Cascades. The elevation ranges from 840′ at the river to approximately 1,600′ at the west edge of town. The growing season is much longer than the high desert areas around Bend, and the climate is much drier than the population centers in the Willamette Valley. Fruit trees, grapes, tomatoes and other garden plants thrive here. The history of this area includes a period when fruit orchards and hops (in nearby Tygh Valley) were economically important. Wine vineyards are... More

Arts Central Station

National Geographic Geotourism Location
The Arts Central Station is housed in Bend’s historic train depot. The 1911 structure was moved stone by stone to this site in 2000 to remove it from the path of new highway construction.
