In Oregon, the land of culinary magic, it seems like some sort of gustatory justice is due to the gluten free eaters and drinkers among us. That’s certainly true when it comes to summer beverages. Oregon is pouring with tasty GF drink options.

At Portland-based Harvester Brewing, the state’s only dedicated gluten-free brewery, James Neumeister brews nothing but GF beer. Neumeister got the idea for Harvester when his wife was diagnosed with gluten intolerance and had to eliminate beer from her diet. Harvester currently makes pale ale, red ale and dark ale as well as two summer seasonals — IPA and raspberry ale. In brewing, Harvester replaces the traditional barley, which contains gluten, with chestnuts from a Willamette Valley farm. Roasted and ground, they provide the toasty flavor.

Deschutes Brewery always has one gluten-free beer on tap at its Bend and Portland pubs and brews with completely gluten-free ingredients. Also from Portland, Widmer Brothers Omission Beer offers pale ale and lager, which are gluten-free(ish). The company uses malted barley in brewing the beers and then removes the gluten. The fine print says “product may contain gluten,” as they can only guarantee levels below 20 parts per million or less.
