Meet Ask Oregon Ambassador Cari Soong
Editor’s Note: Ask Oregon is a program that allows visitors to ask Oregon experts about traveling throughout the state. We’d like to introduce you to our expert on Oregon outdoor adventure, Cari Soong.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Oregon?
Oregon has the best of everything. The best food, the best drink, epic trails, deep powder…there really is something for everyone.
What’s your favorite way to enjoy Oregon?
There are so many ways to enjoy Oregon. My favorite way is by bicycle. Last fall I rode the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway from Armitage Park to Champoeg State Park, and I can’t wait to ride the state’s other scenic bikeways. It’s cool that with so many bikeways popping up statewide, you can enjoy all the best of Oregon by pedal.
What’s the one tip you always give to visitors?
I always recommend people go drive the state’s scenic byways. Once you venture off Interstate 5, you discover how diverse the regions are. One of my favorites is the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway that follows along the majestic North Umpqua River past Diamond Lake, Mt. Thielsen and the north entrance of Crater Lake National Park.
Describe your perfect Oregon vacation.
Spring/Summer: Pack the car up with camping gear, golf clubs, bikes, hiking boots and a dog and head to the Oregon Coast to camp at a coastal campground. Fall: Enjoy the cooler temperatures and fall colors out on the mountain bike trails in Central Oregon between Oakridge and Bend, then relax by the fire at one of the area B&B’s. Winter: Stay at a cabin near Mount Hood, snowboard all day, enjoy a local hot spring, and dine at a local restaurant along Highway 26.
