When I heard that Oregon was going to have its own beer dedicated to it by the great folks at Rogue Brewery, my taste buds did a little happy dance and I couldn’t wait to go out and get a bottle or two. As I headed down the beer aisle in my favorite store and made my way through the other beers NOT brewed in Oregon, I finally hit the jackpot. The first thing I noticed was the eye-catching design on the outside of the bottle, nothing flashy or corny, but inviting. On the top of the label are the words ‘Rogue’ underneath that, the logo that Oregon150.org uses for the Oregon 150 campaign. Below that, the words ‘Sustain the Spirit’ and finally the name of this great tasting ale, ‘Sesquicentennial Ale’. Unique to the ale that resides within a hefty 1 pint, 6 fluid ounce bottle waiting to quench my thirst and satisfy my now impatient taste buds.

There’s something very bold about a brewing company that comes out and says, “Happy 150th birthday Oregon, we’re dedicating a beer to you, oh great state. We believe that we’ve captured the very best of what Oregon has to offer to the masses of Oregonians, and beyond, the art-form that is a perfectly brewed ale.”

As I begin to pour this nectar of the brew gods into my favorite glass, I immediately notice the burnt amber orange color of this beer. Great aroma, and a wonderful taste of malts, hops, yeast and more; all working together and not overpowering each other in any way. It goes down easy and good to the last drop. This certainly was well worth the wait for me and great enough for the folks at Oregon 150 to give this bottle their blessing:

“With Rogue’s deep roots in the Oregon brewing community, their years of award-winning beers, history of charitable giving and new foray into growing their own malting barley and hops, they were the natural choice to brew Oregon’s sesquicentennial beer”

-Melisa McDonald, Executive Director, Oregon 150

Well done, Rogue Brewery! And thank you to the great folks at Oregon 150. I recommend going out and getting YOUR hands on a bottle or two this weekend. Make sure to raise your glasses to this great state of ours in celebration of its 150th birthday. And, I hate to sound like an after school special but as always, please drink responsibly.
