Here’s a recipe for a distinctly Oregon experience. Combine one part striking scenery, one part incredible food and one part classic riding. Mix thoroughly by pedaling over a three-day period. Season with great company. The result: a satisfying fusion of both outdoor and cultural exploration.
As one of Oregon’s most recognized landmarks, Mt. Hood helps define the skyline of each of these rides. So it’s fitting that it should serve as the backdrop for a series of bike routes and excursions that highlight the rich diversity of riding, eating, drinking and general awesomeness on tap in Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory.
In search of just this mix on the southwest flanks of the state’s most famous peak, I joined forces with my friends Alex, Rachael and Mikhael for a long weekend of two-wheeled exploration, fueled by a sampling of the region’s famous cuisine and topped off with a combo of on-bike scenery and cultural high points.
Day One: An easy ride on the bike, this day was all about food, art and shopping, mixing excellent meals with some city walking and exploring on Lake Oswego’s paved bike paths.

Day Two: Today was a farmland adventure, complete with a visit to a historic country store, a farmers market and a ferry crossing—not to mention dining on a famous bowl of oatmeal and some small-batch chocolate truffles.

Day Three: On our final day we went into the mountains for a ride along the historic Barlow Road with its alpine meadows and striking views. The day capped off with a few holes of golf, a relaxing spa visit and an informal meal.
