Cast Lake Trail climbs approximately 0.2 miles, then drops for the last 0.31 miles down to the lake. Magnificent wildflower displays, especially beargrass and rhododendron, along with mountain views from high points along the lakeshore make this an excellent wilderness hike.

Outstanding campsites are located on bluffs overlooking the north and east side of the lake. Wood fires are discouraged in this area, as the available dead and down naturally occurring firewood is extremely limited. Portable backpacking stoves are recommended.

Directions: From Sandy: Travel east on Highway 26 to Zigzag. Turn left (north) at the Zigzag store onto Lolo Pass Road, following it four miles to East Mountain Drive, located on the right side of the road. Follow East Mtn Dr. for 0.6 miles. The trailhead for the Zigzag Mountain Trail #775 is on the left (northeast) side of the road with limited parking available. Follow this trail to Cast Lake Trail.

Seasonal Access: Normally Accessible: Spring-Fall

Facility Type: Trail
