Starvation Creek State Park
Just about anything you find on TravelOregon.com can be added to your own personal Trip Planner. Find out how.
Starvation Creek provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking, viewing interpretive signs, wildlife watching, bird watching and viewing scenery.
Trails spreading out from this day-use park lead onto adjacent National Forest Service land and connect to the Mt. Defiance and Starvation Ridge trails. Heading east, trek along a remnant of the Historic Columbia River Highway to Viento State Park and campground.
Planning is underway for trail improvements, including a repaving project that will make it accessible according to American Disability Act (ADA) standards. Other historic highway segments designed for trail use and accessible to people with disabilities are now open between Hood River and Mosier (Twin Tunnels segment) and from Cascade Locks north to the Tooth Rock Trailhead.
The waterfall at Starvation Creek, one of the few in this area of the gorge, is an elegant cascade admired by gorge travelers for thousands of years.
Vital stats: There is no fee to use this park. Eastbound vehicle access only. Westbound sightseers can park at the trailhead at Viento and walk the two miles to the park.
: Climate in this region changes drastically with elevation. The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations and as heavy snow in the higher elevations. Winter temperatures are normally cool at the lower elevations and cold at the higher elevations. Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent and does not stay on the ground for long. Late spring, summer and early autumn bring the best chance for clear, sunny days and bring moderate temperatures.
Location: Starvation Creek is located along I-84, 10 miles west of Hood River (eastbound access only).
