Smith Rock State Park is an international rock climbing destination. In addition, the park offers offers visitors camping, picnicking, fishing , hiking, and wildlife watching.

There are several thousand climbing routes in Smith Rock State Park. More than a thousand are bolted routes. The park also offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Along your trip through the canyon, you might see golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, river otter and beaver. Due to the uniqueness and fragile aspect of the park, park rangers enforce the animal leash law and strongly encourage all park users to stay on trails.

Vital stats: A small day-use fee or an annual parks pass is required for day-use of the park. A walk-in bivouac area serves visitors who want to camp overnight. No RV’s and no campfires are permitted in the camping area.

Smith Rock was one of several Central Oregon locations featured in the Kevin Costner film The Postman.

: Climate in central and eastern Oregon varies greatly depending on elevation. The high elevations receive much more precipitation and colder temperatures. These regions are much more arid and see greater temperature extremes than western Oregon. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April, mostly in the form of snow in the higher elevations. Winter temperatures can drop well below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Snow remains in the high mountains into early summer. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to bring clear, sunny days, with warm to hot temperatures at the low elevations and moderate temperatures at the higher elevations. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon.

Location: Smith Rock State Park is located in Central Oregon, off U.S. Highway 97, 9 miles northeast of Redmond.

With a name like \”Smith Rock\” you might think : OK another Plymoth Rock, but it is nothing of the sort. This is a breath takeing mini Grand Canyon. Yes, you can see it in a few hours but it is well woth spending the day or two. You are able to hike along the rim, travel through the Crooked River bank or like thousands …climb the internationaly known sheer rock walls. Like the Grand Canyon, it\’s colors are ever changeing in the light of the day. Bring you hiking boots…
