Antelope

This little ranching town was born when a stagecoach rumbled to a stop on an arid plain in Central Oregon. Antelope draws fossil fanatics to the nearby Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, while the Crooked River National Grassland teems with options for camping, hiking and fishing. Whitewater thrill seekers and flat-water floaters enjoy the Deschutes and John Day rivers. Get a scare with a visit to a nearby ghost town. More

Overview Perched atop the edge of a rocky cliff in the Umpqua National Forest, Acker Rock Lookout offers visitors a unique lodging experience with spectacular panoramic views of the South Umpqua watershed in southwest Oregon. Still used in active fire detection today, the lookout was placed on the rocky cliff via helicopter in the 1960's. Before the advent of airplane surveillance for fire detection, there were more than a dozen lookouts on the Tiller Ranger District. Today Acker Rock and Pickett Butte are the only... More

Sawtooth Struggle

12Mi, Extreme
Make sure you have your big girl/big boy shorts on for this one. This loop may be only a little over 12 miles, but it packs in more than 3,000 feet of climbing (do the math; if it’s a loop the gain is all in about half of that). That said, here’s a chance to delve even farther into the wild, where few riders go, and the reward is a quiet pedal through a spectral stretch of forest – oh, and of course some indelible... More

Time Warp to Ashland Shuttle

16Mi, Challenging
Time Warp’s reputation precedes it, with visiting riders putting the trail at the top of their list. Don’t just jump into this ride, however, as it is both physically and technically demanding, with steep, loose descents and plenty of pedaling to get there. Warm up on the other local rides before putting this gem into the rotation so that you can fully enjoy the trail, stunning scenery, and remote feel. Ask your shuttle driver to point you in the right direction if necessary, but what... More

How to Take Amazing Photos of Your Oregon Travels

I’ve been a park ranger in Oregon for 12 years, stationed everywhere from the Oregon Dunes and Crater Lake National Park to the Deschutes National Forest and Rogue Wild and Scenic River. No matter where I work, visitors share one thing in common — they want to take the best possible photos. There’s just one downside to that: Some photos are so iconic that everyone wants to take them, and they end up all looking the same More

Knebal Springs Loop

9Mi, Moderate
Knebal Springs may be THE classic ride in the 44Trails.org system. It seems to be one of the first trails to be clear and open in the season – these days, as early as May.
