Oregon Dunes KOA Holiday

Oregon Dunes KOA Kampgrounds has site for RVs of any size. There's also tent sites, cabins and a vintage caboose. This is the only full-service private campground on the southern Oregon coast with full ATV and ORV access to Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Off-road vehicles are in/out of the campground from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. If this sounds exciting, then this is the place for you. You're just 10 minutes by car or 2 miles by ATV through the dunes to get to... More

Cranberry Sweets & More

For over 50 years, sweet satisfaction has been Cranberry Sweets & More's goal and their guarantee.Bandon is Oregon's cranberry capital, and for years these beautiful red berries were harvested from the bogs only to find relative obscurity. Some were crushed and filtered into fruit drinks. Others were bagged, frozen, and enjoyed maybe a few times a year. There had to be a kinder fate; a way to enjoy their tangy taste year-round.Finally, in 1962, Dorothy Johnson, a Bandon resident, invented a way to capture the... More

What is there to see and do in the city of Lebanon?

Lebanon is a great little town that has undergone some big changes in the last decade; it's gone from being mostly dependent on the timber industry to being the home of a small medical school and regional health care facilities — the growth due to this new development has brought some great amenities to the town. Here are my top picks for Lebanon and the surrounding area. Cheadle Lake: This is a 100-acre lake and park surrounded by trails, home to lots of geese and ducks... More

Icy Treats to Beat Portland’s Summer Heat

The options are endless when it comes to frozen desserts to stay cool during Portland’s glorious summers, and I’m sure there are fruity and creamy delights from your own days as a kid. You’ll find plenty of vegan and dairy-free options, too. From Mexican paletas and Hawaiian shave ice to Filipino halo-halo and Italian sorbetti, here are some of the coolest treats to chill out. More

Is it possible to visit Hood/Gorge and the Coast in two days?

You can absolutely do it! My suggestion would be to drive from Portland to the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway. Take in the waterfalls, take in the misty air, take in the probable rain (bring a rain jacket) and then stop for ice cream at EastWind Drive Thru in Cascade Locks before making your way to Hood River. There's a little coffee shop/restaurant called Doppio's Cafe on Main Street. They've got the best sandwiches in town and even better coffee. After leaving Hood River, head... More

Wine-Tasting Getaway Off the Beaten Path

Sponsored
Three dozen wineries clustered primarily in Polk and Benton counties (around Salem and Corvallis) form the Heart of Willamette Wineries. In this part of Oregon wine country, you may be greeted by a friendly winery dog or cat, and there's a good chance the person pouring your wine is a member of the family who owns the place. You might have to share the roads with a tractor or two, but the wines you’ll savor and the people you’ll meet make it a journey worth... More

Clamming at Tillamook Bay

When a summer heat wave hits, I enjoy cooling off by heading to the Oregon Coast and digging my supper from the sea. Ochoco Reservoir

A dam constructed on Ochoco Creek after World War I formed the reservoir for irrigation and flood control which allowed for recreation activities. Mill Creek and Ochoco Creek input to the reservoir and the output is Ochoco Creek. Except for the campground and dam, almost all of the reservoir's shoreline is private land. Although the campground is owned by Oregon State Parks and Recreation, it is leased and operated by Crook County. Reservoir water is used primarily for farm irrigation, so the lake level drops significantly... More

I’d like to plan a trip to visit colleges in Portland and Eugene. I’d also like to visit Medford all in 3-days! ~ Marnie S.

First of all, you can certainly fly in to the Medford area or begin even in Eugene or Portland.  That depends on you of course.  Portland is just shy of 2-1/2 hours north from the Eugene area.  Medford is about 3 hours south of Eugene.  So, if you fly in to Portland, you can spend one whole day enjoying the city and touring a few colleges.  As you may already know, Portland is home to many colleges/universities and I just happened to have driven by Reed College... The Ochoco National Forest is located in Central Oregon, north and east of the City of Prineville. It encompasses 850,000 acres of rimrock, canyons, geologic oddities, dense pine forests, and high desert terrain as well as the North Fork of the Crooked River. At 155,000 acres, Crooked River Grasslands is one of the largest tracks of preserved grassland in the U.S. Visitors can find a variety of evidence of a ‘failed’ homestead attempts on the Grasslands: stone shelters, tools, cans, log cabins, barns and water... Ochoco Ranger Rental

Ochoco Ranger Station was established in 1906 as part of the Western Division of the Blue Mountain Forest Reserves. By 1911, Ochoco Ranger Station was part of one of seven ranger districts on the newly formed Ochoco National Forest. The site quickly grew from a single office/residence building to a compound with an office, residence, storage building and barn. This house was constructed in 1940 specifically for the district ranger by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the US Forest Service. It showcases the rustic architectural... More
