We are in Roseburg & want to go to Eastern Oregon beyond Crater Lake and head north towards Ione with our travel trailer. We like hiking and biking too. Where should we stop and what should we see on the way?

If you go north from Crater Lake toward Bend on 97, you can then head east on Highway 26. You will pass through wonderful small towns between Prineville and Mitchell as well as plenty of campgrounds and hiking options in the Ochoco National Forest. From Mitchell, you can follow the John Day River on Oregon 19, a beautiful route that will lead you directly to Ione. More

Line Butte East (Formerly Fawn Creek) Trailhead

This trailhead, which is located near the forest boundary in the southwestern region of the Ochoco National Forest, allows access to Line Butte Trail (#807). It is a bit challenging to access the trailhead from any direction and requires travel on gravel or dirt roads. There is a small amount of parking in the turnout, but there is more about a quarter mile to the southwest where the road dead-ends.Click here for a map of the Lookout Mountain trails system. More

Potlid South Trailhead

 Located just to the east of McKay Saddle, this trailhead is the southern access point for Potlid Trail (#836), which wraps around the west side of Bull Mountain. In the spring and summer of 2015 there will be a timber sale in the vicinity of the trailhead and within the first 1/2 mile of the trail. Please call the Ochoco National Forest office at (541) 416-6500 or look for signs detailing when you should avoid the area. More
