I will be traveling from Portland to Baker City and want to take 2 days for the trip. I love art/sculpture, local crafts, scenery and small towns. Can you suggest a good overnight point for my first night?

I recommend a driving route on the Old West Highway (26) that will take you over Mt Hood, through small towns along Highway 26 and along the scenic John Day River directly to Baker City. The total driving time is about 7 hours. For your first night—if you’re up for driving—is the quaint town of Mitchell, Oregon, about 4 hours away from Portland. If you’d like to save the bulk of your driving and sightseeing for the next day, treat yourself to a night at... More

Saddle Up for Cowboy Adventures in the John Day River Territory

There’s a place where cowboys and Native Americans aren’t just characters in old western movies; where cattle drives, campfire stories, and endless star-studded skies are part of everyday life. In the John Day River Territory, locals live history every day, and they’re eager to share it. So pack your spurs and hit the road for a chance to experience the Wild West as it really was.

Road Trip: Fossil and Condon

Sunshine looks different on the hills of Eastern Oregon. It tucks away on the curves of the John Day River and in the rolling wheat fields along the two-lane highway near Cottonwood Canyon State Park. It bounces off the untamed leaves of the trees for which that park was named. It peaks over the jutting cliff line… More

Are there campsites near the Painted Hills with restrooms?

Sounds like a really fun trip! The Painted Hills are one of my favorite places in Oregon, with a landscape that is both majestic and a little surreal when the sunlight hits it just right. One of the best campgrounds near the Painted Hills is the Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site, located between John Day and Mount Vernon right along the cool waters of the John Day River. This campground has both restrooms and hot showers available, and it has easy access for vehicles. The... More

What's the best route to see the John Day Fossil Beds?

You can make a great loop between Portland and John Day. The most exciting route will be to take Highway 26 all the way. It will take you over Mt Hood into central Oregon and through The Painted Hills. Total driving time is about 5 hours. For a return trip, I recommend heading north through The John Day Fossil Beds on OR 19 to Arlington. There you will join Interstate 84 and make the riveting drive along the Columbia River and through the Columbia River... More
