Latourell Falls is usually the first waterfall seen along the Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway. Because of this, it usually leaves quite an impression on first-time visitors. The falls plunge 224 feet over a massive wall of columnar basalt – some of the best formations in the Pacific Northwest – before cascading hastily toward the Columbia River. This waterfall is usually most recognized for the large patch of bright yellow lichen adorning the cliff face to the right of the falls, and this characteristic has led many famous photographers to give this location their treatment. The drainage of Latourell Creek is rather small, so the falls become significantly less impressive later in the year, but are always worth stopping for a quick look.

"8":
639
Blue Lake Regional Park

- The new natural discovery garden invites visitors to experience the wonders of nature while learning to garden naturally.

Just as the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, the Vista House serves as the symbol of the Columbia River Gorge. In fact, the architect of the Vista House -- Edgar Lazarus -- and Emma Lazarus (who wrote the poem of the Statue of Liberty), were brother and sister.

Millions of visitors driving from from Portland through the Columbia River Gorge don't realize the full impact of its beauty until they come around the bend near Corbett at exit 22 and see the famous building on the top of the cliff to the right. This is Crown Point and the building is the Vista House.

The Vista House was built in 1916 at the same time as Highway 30 (what is now the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, and the only way to reach Crown Point). The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge. The octagonal building with its copper dome now houses a museum, gift shop and interpretive display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge (the building is open from March-October).

It has survived many years wear and tear from millions of visitors and pounding gales of the east wind (sometimes measured here at 110 mph). The future of the Vista House is now in the hands of the Friends of the Vista House, who are trying to raise over $2 million for a long-overdue restoration.

Vital stats: There is no fee to use this park. For information, call 1-800-551-6949 or (503) 695-2261. The development of a display and test garden was initiated in 1950 by the Portland Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. Sam Jackson, owner of the Oregon Journal, had donated 27 acres on Terwilliger Blvd for the garden, but the site was deemed unsuitable because of its steep terrain. Claude I. Sersanous, one of the group assigned to select a new site, suggested the garden's present location near Reed College. Referred to as Shakespeare Island by Reed College students because of the Shakespearean plays that had been performed there, it was abandoned and overgrown with brush and blackberries. Through the efforts of chapter memebers and other volunteers, and with the support of Park Superintendent C.P. Keyser, the garden flourished. The site which now bears the name Cathedral Park is steeped in history. It is believed to be one of the 14 Lewis and Clark landing sites in the Vancouver-Portland area: William Clark and eight men camped there on April 2, 1806. This spot had been a fishing and camping site for many area Indian tribes. In 1847, the founder of St. Johns, James John, settled on the site and operated a ferry to Linnton across the Willamette River. In 1931, the St. Johns Bridge was built on the site with 400-ft towers and a main span of 1,207 feet. It is the only steel suspension bridge in Portland and is designated as an official historical landmark.

In the early 1970s, Howard Galbraith, the `honorary mayor` of unincorporated St. Johns, got tired of the junkyard state of the area under the eastern end of the bridge. He organized a drive that eventually raised $7.5 million to build a park. After eight years of community fundraising, combined with state, county and city funding, the park was dedicated at a community celebration on May 3, 1980. It got its name from a photo of the St. Johns Bridge by Al Monner that appeared on the front page of the Oregon Journal in 1968. Reference was made to its beautiful cathedral-like arches and the park found its name.

an

Conduit believes a community is alive when there is dialog, interaction, collaboration, networking, and critical discourse. To nurture and enhance the natural growth of networks and personal connections within our community, Conduit offers a range of programs to promote and build links between audience, performers, and creators, between other artists in the community and dancers, and between dance writers, teachers and artists.

Conduit serves as a central hub for making connections between dancers, musicians, choreographers and other artists interested in working with dance, and manages a list of tech production professionals who have experience with dance. It also holds Dance Town Hall meetings to discuss the needs of dance artists and the challenges of sustaining an artist’s life in this region.

Through
Dance Uncovered, a series of artist's talks and open rehearsals are offered to engage audience with the dancer's creative process, and help artists get feedback about their work. Conduit has hosted such projects as the National Dance Project's Regional Dance Development Initiative for the Portland region (2005). The Initiative provides professional growth for dance artists across the U.S. through a dance lab designed to refine work, hone presentation skills, and strengthen partnerships between artists and presenters.

Conduit has also hosted Dance USA professional development workshops, and partnered with PICA (Portland Institute for Contemporary Art), White Bird Dance and other organizations to provide space for master classes and workshops that connect local artists with national and international artists.

Conduit sponsors fundraisers for important artist-run projects such as Front, a journal of contemporary dance published by Portland area artists that seeks to build critical discourse about contemporary dance, its role, place in culture, and the multi-faceted directions dance is heading in the U.S. and beyond.

Wy-am, or Celilo Falls, once one of North America’s largest waterfalls, offered life-sustaining salmon and served as a gathering place for thousands of Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. The profound significance of this site is still felt today. Construction of The Dalles Dam in 1957 inundated the site and silenced the great Celilo Falls, creating a slack-water lake in their place. Before the construction and dedication of The Dalles Dam, Wy-am served for centuries as one of history’s great marketplaces. A half dozen tribes had permanent villages between the falls and where the dam now stands. As many as 5,000 people would gather to trade, feast and participate in games and religious ceremonies. Elders and chiefs regulated the fishing, permitting none until after the first salmon ceremony. Each day, fishing started and ended at the sound of a whistle. The loss of this major fishing, gathering and ceremonial area via inundation due to The Dalles Lock and Dam upset tribal life in the region forever. Some Elders still remember the falls and grieve their loss. Celilo Falls was also prosperous to the region through salmon canneries, but it is the tribal heritage that remains significant today.

Visitors can access this site at Celilo Park on I-84 at exit 97, about 12 miles east of The Dalles, where south of the freeway stand the small Indian Village and Celilo Longhouse (still used today for ceremonies) and north of the freeway the park rest area on the river.

/see-do/recreation/geotourism-sustainable-travel/oregon-adventurecation/celilo-falls-and-celilo-park/
a Waterfall
       (within Recreation)"},"375":
665099
Sherars Falls
Sherar’s Falls, located within the ceded lands on the Deschutes River, is a
traditional fishing site used by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs
since time immemorial.
