Horseback riders, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers can also enjoy marked trails, offering both gentle routes and challenging terrain. Whatever your mode of transportation, the views of the Grande Ronde Valley and the Eagle Cap Wilderness from the flanks of Mount Emily are breathtaking.

MERA is open year ‘round for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Wildflowers are typically in full bloom from April to June. In the winter months, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing is popular in the mid- to high-elevations. Ski routes range from low angled climbs and descents along double track roads and open areas to very steep black diamond runs through glades and natural openings.

With nearly 12 miles of single track, non-motorized trails, mountain cyclists, trail runners, hikers, and equestrians enjoy challenging terrain. Another 12 miles of double track trails, which are typically unimproved roads that are closed to motorized travel, are also available.

Don Beck's bronze sculpture subjects to date include; western, wildlife (north American and African wildlife), marine life, waterfowl, fish, historic, equine (horses), native American Indians, dogs, cowboys, cowgirls, contemporary and/or portrait.

All Don Beck's bronze sculptures are done in small limited editions with some very small limited editions of silver sculpture available making them very rare and more valuable for the serious collector and investor alike. Beck spends an enormous amount of time in the research prior to and during the creation of each new sculpture that he undertakes. As you will note in his work, much attention to minute detail for realism and authenticity is undertaken, as well as Don's unique ability to capture the spirit of his subjects. Beck's love for horses, dogs and animal life of any and all species, and including people can be seen in his work (very realistic and life like).

Nearly all of today's excursion and museum railroads operate on abandoned rights-of-way. The Sumpter Valley Railway, located 26 miles southwest of Baker City Oregon, on U.S. Highway 7, has a unique characteristic over all of these railroads. We have built the railroad ourselves. Although the road bed and track is mostly on original Sumpter Valley Railway right-of-way, the original track was scrapped in 1947, and nearly all of the original road bed had eroded away. With an all volunteer work force, the SVRy has rebuilt over 7 miles of track, and is still growing.

"Maxville" was the railroad logging town that existed about 15 miles north of Wallowa, Oregon. Maxville itself operated until the early 1930s and was unique in that it included 50 or so African Americans and their families and was home to the only segregated school in Oregon. Previously, historic records only made small mention of these African-Americans. In the last three years, the Maxville Heritage Project has fostered a reawakening of interest in this rich chapter of history through public lectures and school visits, an Elder-hostel lecture, AP articles and an OPB broadcast spotlighting this unique local history. With the ground swell of historic artifacts and stories emerging from descendants and those with relationships to people from Maxville, a large number of video, image, audio and textual digital files, and hard copy images have been collected.
