The 72nd Annual Roy Webster Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim. Welcome to the annual Hood River County Chamber of Commerce event, the Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim. The swim originated in 1942 when local orchardist Roy Webster challenged himself and some friends to swim across the river--and it's been happening ever since.<\/p>\r\n

On the day of the swim, participants board the Sternwheeler in the wee hours of the morning to be ferried across the river. Where a railroad station once stood is now the home of one of the Gorge's best kept secrets: Viento is a great place to camp! With modern campsites, Viento almost always has a spot available when other campgrounds in the area are full. No reservations are required. On weekends in the summer, rangers provide interpretive programs. A fully-accesible restroom is located here.

Viento has a day-use area with easy access to the Columbia River and some of the best windsurfing in the Gorge. There's a great picnic area right next to a wonderful babbling creek (just right for skimming stones and soaking sore feet).

A 1-mile trail from Viento to Starvation Creek takes you along a section of the Historic Columbia River Highway. Now a hiking trail, there hasn't been auto traffic here in more than 50 years.

Planning is underway for trail improvements, including a repaving project that will make it accessible according to American Disability Act (ADA) standards. Other historic highway segments designed for trail use and accessible to people with disabilities are now open between Hood River and Mosier (Twin Tunnels segment) and from Cascade Locks north to the Tooth Rock Trailhead.

The 1980 movie – The Shining – used aerial shots of Timberline Lodge as part of its opening scene, and exterior footage for some establishing shots of the fictional Overlook Hotel throughout the movie.

Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977, Timberline Lodge is one of Oregon’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing nearly two million visitors every year. Considered an architectural wonder, it’s still being used for its original intent—a magnificent ski lodge and mountain retreat for all to enjoy.

Built in 1936 as a home for skiers and climbers, Timberline is today home to North America's longest ski season. In the height of winter, the ground floor of the lodge is typically fully buried in snow, with entry through a snow tunnel, or directly into the second floor. The lodge together with its cozy rooms, two resident St. Bernards (Bruno and Heidi) pub and restaurant, is a welcome relief after a full day on the slopes.
