The Little Nestucca River joins the Nestucca River from the south just before it flows into the Pacific Ocean. Only the headwaters are in public ownership - being managed by the Forest Service - with most of the primary fishing areas located on private lands. The river offers some boat fishing opportunities with a boat ramp located at the Hwy 101 bridge. Most people fish for salmon and steelhead in the fall and winter.

NOTE: This river contains wild coho salmon that are listed as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act. Know your fish well if you decide to fish this river or any of its tributaries and help conserve this species.

A popular campground and day-use area, Cape Lookout is located on a sand spit between Netarts Bay and the ocean, giving you a terrific view of the ocean with easy access to the beach. Beachcombing is popular here, and the park is reputedly a good place to find glass floats. More than eight miles of hiking and walking trails wind through a lush old-growth forest. The Cape Lookout trail follows the headland for more than 2 miles. A bench is located at the end of the trail. Enjoy the view! You might see a whale or two and along with other wildlife.

Two walking trails -- a nature trail and the Jackson Creek trail -- are perfect for a shorter jaunt. The nature trail gives you a close-up view of native trees and other plants. Numbered markers are keyed to a trail guide. The Jackson Creek trail starts with an interpretive panel describing the local salmon restoration project.

Be sure to look up when you visit this park ... hang gliders and paragliders fill the air with colorful wings as they catch thermals and rise to dizzying heights. Along with Cape Kiwanda and Cape Meares, Lookout is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route.

Vital stats: A small day-use fee or an annual parks pass are required for day-use of the park. The park offers 38 full hookup campsites, 2 electric sites, 176 tent sites (maximum site 60 feet); 4 yurts; 4 group tent areas; and a hiker/biker camp. Hawk Creek Golf Course is located just 10 miles north of Lincoln City on the east side of HWY 101. The course's unique layout provides some of the most interesting holes you will ever see on a golf course. The most unique (and difficult) being the 300-yard, par 4, 5th hole. For most people, this hole ends up playing a lot longer than the scorecard indicates. The tee box requires a drive to perhaps the steepest side hill fairway in Oregon. The fairway falls sharply to the right and so does the golf ball. Although the 5th hole may be very challenging for most golfers, you better bring out your most accurate iron for the Par 3, 2nd Hole. A short little 145-yard Par 3 may seem like no big deal as you read the scorecard. But once you step on tee, you realize that the green is nowhere to be seen. The only blind Par-3 there is this side of Oregon. Hawk Creek, formed from pure mountain springs, tumbles down from five miles up in the Coast Range and traverses the length of the course. Red-tailed hawks are a common sight as they float in the sky above the course. Miles of level, sandy beach await the beachcomber or hiker; and forested trails and excellent fishing are nearby.

David Johnson's Guide Service strives to bring you the best the Northwest has to offer. Fort Yamhill was built in the mid-1800s to regulate the eastern border of the Grand Ronde Agency Coastal Reservation, and represents a difficult time for the people of the region. Besides birding interest, a visit offers a glimpse into life in the 1850s and 1860s. A 0.5 mi hiking trail winds through Douglas-fir forest edge and open, hilly meadow. In spring and summer listen for Warbling and Cassin's Vireos and Swainson's Thrush. Watch for Violet-green and Tree Swallows, Western Tanager, and a variety of warblers including Black-throated Gray, Orange-crowned, and Wilson's Warblers. Year-round look for Hutton's Vireo, Black-capped and Chestnut- backed Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Bushtit, and Bewick's and Winter Wrens.

From Hwy 18, go N at Valley Junction on Hwy 22 (Hebo Rd) 1 mi, to the Fort Yamhill State Park sign. I became "hooked" on fishing when I caught my first King or Chinook salmon at age 8. Right after my tour in Viet Nam I began commercial fishing, got my charter boat license, and was off and running. I also got lucky and found a job that I could drive a fire truck two days a week and fish 5. I did this for 26 years.

To my great surprise I found out how much the corporate market loves to fish! They made up 90% of my business most years. I have had the enjoyment of guiding people from many walks of life including Presidential cabinet members, Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and Hall of Fame professional athletes. But the vast majority are just like you and me, good people who enjoy fishing and the beautiful outdoors of the Oregon coast.

A short path descends to the beach at the pebbly mouth of a lazy little creek. The north beach is topped by a jumble of quaint old cottages until the beach narrows to the massive Cascade Head. Fragments of lava form ragged islands where comic, long-necked cormorants dry their black wings atop guano-stained roosts. At low tide it's possible to clamber around the headland's tip to a secret cove and beach. Don't linger too long or you'll have to wait hours until the next low tide to get out!
