For the 59th consecutive year, Depoe Bay, Oregon will host the annual Indian-Style Salmon Bake on Saturday, September 20, from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Salmon Bake is the Oregon coast’s signature salmon celebration.

The salmon is cooked in a traditional technique used for generations by native coastal tribes. Preparations begin months before the feast, as volunteers head to the woods to cut 350 six foot long stakes of alder wood.

Before sunrise on the morning of the event, volunteers ignite a huge 80-foot fire line with six cords of fir and three cords of alder. Thousands of pounds of salmon fillets are positioned on the alder wood stakes and held in place with cedar strips. The alder stakes are then positioned diagonally over the smoldering fire line, imparting rich flavors to the salmon as they bake to perfection.

Each salmon is cooked about 20 minutes on each side before being sent off to be served in 8-ounce steaks together with coleslaw, garlic bread and a drink. Visitors enjoy their meals sitting at tables in the sun or under a tent, listening to Native American music and watching performances by native tribal dancers.

Raffle tickets will be on sale at the Salmon Bake for “Discover Depoe Bay” packages, which include lodging, dining, fishing and whale watching trips.

You can experience this delicious tradition at the Depoe Bay City Park, located at the south end of the town’s picturesque harbor. Free shuttles will take visitors to and from the park, as well as from the park to downtown shops along the ocean front. Many Depoe Bay merchants offer special discounts for the Salmon Bake event.

Admission to the Indian Style Salmon Bake is free. Advance sale meal tickets are offered at a discount price of $20. Meal tickets will be $24 at the gate on the day of the event. After prices are announced, advance ticket sales will be available from several Depoe Bay locations including: Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce, 223 SW Highway 101, Suite B; Pacific Brass & Copper Works, 20 Bay St.; What Not Shop, 411 South Highway 101, The Spouting Horn Restaurant, Highway 101 at the bridge; Fuddy Duddy Fudge, 112 North Highway 101; Depoe Bay Liquor Store, 531 N. Highway 101, and in Lincoln Beach the Big Mountain Coffee Company, 3940 N. Highway 101.

For those unable to attend the event, meal deliveries are available from Salishan to Otter Rock for orders placed in advance.

The Salmon Bake is a non-profit event sponsored by the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and residents. Proceeds help fund Chamber activities as well as town events and improvement projects.
