Tumalo State Park offers a quiet, quaint campground where your family can stay in authentic tepees, a cool yurt, or camp in your own tent or RV. The yurts are domed tents with structural support, a plywood floor, lockable wooden door, lights, heating, and beds with mattresses. In addition, the park offers riverside hiking trails, and a group picnic area.

Tumalo State Park offers winter recreation that is just up the road at Mt. Bachelor where skiers and snowboarders can experience some of the best powder in the state. If you are not fond of the lifts, there are miles of groomed Nordic trails and tons of snowy backcountry areas to explore.

At dawn or dusk try casting for rainbow trout as they sip at mayflies and caddis flies. Grab your raft and float with your feet dangling into the cool water during the heat of the summer. Take a hike and explore one of the river trails as they gently wind through canyons created by the untamed river. Watch deer forage for food just as the sun creeps below the rim of the canyon.

Vital stats: The park is open year-round. Day-use requires a small fee or an annual parks pass. The golf course is bordered by national forest land and carved out of a stand of Ponderosa and high desert pine trees with lava rock outcroppings, dotted with sparkling lakes and seaside sand-filled bunkers. Laid out on a softly rolling terrain, the old-style design, without the long walks between greens and tees, invites the golfer to walk the meticulously groomed and maintained fairways. Phil’s Trail is both the name of a very popular mountain bike trail near Bend, but also the general name the locals have given for the huge complex of singletrack trails in the area.

Located just a couple miles from the center of town, the singletrack starts before you even reach the parking area with a ribbon of dirt paralleling Skyliners Road beginning at the Mt. Washington Road roundabout. There’s a couple of places to park along Skyliners where you maximize your dirt experience.

Once at the parking area, just a half mile down the paved Forest Road 4606, you’ll find trailheads for Ben’s, Kent’s, Phil’s and Marvin’s Garden. (There’s a vault toilet there as well.)

Pick any one of the routes and you’re set. A little farther up you’ll run into KGB, MTB, Grand Slam, VooDoo, ELV and more trails that are very well marked.

You can do a short out and back, combine some trails to make a longer loop or make it a full day in the saddle by pedaling nearly all the way up to the base of the Cascades before screaming with delight on your way back down.

Separate trails were built for hikers, horses, and bicycles. Cyclists also share the hiking trail nearest the river, as long as conflicts are minimized. Low snow years can allow year-round use for most of this trail. Due to heavy use and repeated conflicts, dogs must be on a leash on these trails.

Mountain Bike Description: Ride back on FS 700 and turn left onto FS 4120, riding towards the river. Continue down FS 4120 for a short time until you reach the overflow parking lot and gated road. Pass through the gate and ride along this road for 0.75 mile. Just before you reach a second gate turn left onto a single track. Cross the road at the Big Eddy Rapids parking lot and continue along this trail for 0.75 mile as you cross several abandoned roads and alternate between single track and double track. When you rejoin FS 4120, at a third gate, follow this for 1 mile as it overlooks the river. Just past the forth gate turn left toward Dillon Falls. At the end of the Dillon Falls parking lot follow the single track back to FS 4120 to retrace your route back to Lava Island Falls and the trailhead.

This route follows Forest service's recommended mountain bike route along the Deschutes River between Lava Island Falls and Dillon Falls. Eagle Rock Loop: Five and one half miles. The first 1/4 mile off the pavement winds through uneven terrain with some rocky areas. The terrain levels as the trail proceeds through an area of thinned trees that provides some good opportunities to observe wildlife. After 1.7 miles, the trail crosses a small wooden bridge. It traverses a mixed pine forest and offers excellent opportunities to see the many different types of wildlife and vegetation in the area. The maintained trail parallels the east side of Squaw Creek and ends at an overlook above the falls. The Cascades, another falls site, can be reached by continuing for another 1/2 mile beyond the overlook. No trail exists between the Falls and the Cascades, but it is relatively easy to navigate the cross-country portion if you keep the creek in your sight.

The cycle of rain and snow makes Squaw Creek Falls an ever changing attraction. The water flowing over the falls comes from melting snow and glaciers on Broken Top and South Sister; causing the size of the falls to vary greatly with the time of year and even the time on day. From March to June alone the flow can increase by more than six times.

The melting snow carries sediment into the creek. At times, the creek can appear red or gray due to various types of sedimentation. Red cinders eroded off of volcanic rock may be present at times when the water flows fairly high. Late in the summer, a milky gray coloration can be caused by "glaciers and carried in the stream.

At the pass the trail becomes the Green Lakes Trail #4070 of the Sisters Ranger District. Horses should not use the Green Lakes Trail until it melts entirely free of snow and dries out in late July or August. If hiking when snow remains, please stay on trail or snow, rather than creating new trails and damaging fragile vegetation. Mosquitoes are quite hungry early in the summer.

This trail is one of the most over used in the Three Sisters Wilderness with little opportunity for solitude. Thus users are strongly encouraged to seek less visited trails, especially on weekends. Other Wilderness trails that offer lovely scenery and considerably more solitude include: Wickiup Plains Trail #12.1, Mirror Lakes Trail #20, Horse Lake Trail #2, Island Meadow Trail #3, Senoj Lake Trail #14.1, Corral Swamp Trail #8, and the Many Lakes Trail #15.
Note: The trail enters the Three Sisters Wilderness Area shortly after leaving the trailhead. Wilderness Permits are required for both day-use and overnight travel in the Wilderness from Memorial Day Weekend until Oct. 31. Permits are available at the trailhead.
Note: Camping at Green Lakes, 4.4 miles from trailhead, is restricted to designated campsites only, typically full by Friday evening each weekend. Campfires are not permitted within 1/4 mile of the lakes to protect the fragile ecosystem.
a
