A public golf course is located next to the park and the nearby fishing village of Charleston provides opportunities for crabbing, clamming and fishing.

Only a short walk from the beach, the campground has sites for tent camping and RV's, as well as cozy and comfortable yurts. Yurts are domed tents with structural support, a plywood floor, lockable wooden door, lights, heating, and beds with mattresses.

Day-use and picnic facilities are located along the bay to allow easy access for beachcombing, fishing, swimming, and boating.

A network of hiking trails connects Sunset Bay with nearby Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks. Hiking these trails will give you a chance to experience pristine coastal forests, seasonal wildflowers and spectacular ocean vistas from atop the rugged cliffs and headlands. From points along the trail, you?ll be treated to views of Gregory Point and the Cape Arago

Shore Acres offers beach access and opportunities for picnicking, wildlife watching, hiking and viewing interpretive information.

In the landscaped area you'll discover a formal garden, an oriental-style pond and two rose gardens which include an All American Rose Selection display. From Thanksgiving through New Years, the gardens are ablaze with thousands of colored lights and holiday decorations put up by community volunteers and The Friends of Shore Acres in cooperation with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

After seeing the garden, you can stroll down a trail to a secluded ocean cove at Simpson Beach or skirt the cliff's edge to see spectacular ocean vistas which often include towering waves crashing against the shoreline after a storm and migrating grey whales. On the site of Simpson's vanished mansion, a fully enclosed observation building will allow you to view the ocean and protect you from the weather. The observation building has interpretive panels describing the history of the Simpson estate.

Designed by Tom Doak, Pacific Dunes opened in 2001. It is remarkably different in character and shot making requirements than our other courses. Pacific Dunes doesn't feel like it was built as much as it was discovered. Rippling fairways remain just as they were found and natural bunkers line the landscape as they have for centuries. The course emerges from shore pines to spectacular 60-foot sand dunes. When the wind blows, precise approach shots are a necessity. Pacific Dunes is short enough to give you hope, but rugged enough to test every facet of your game.

Look for hummingbirds diving from great heights during spring courtship. In the fall, the area around the lake boasts a diversity of mushrooms. The brown color of the water is due to slow decomposition of leaves and grasses which are food for lake residents like frogs, salamanders, and fish.

The eastern portion of the trail provides views of Bluebill Lake as it winds through Western hemlock trees and huckleberry and salal bushes. At the
southern end of the lake, an extensive boardwalk protects the wetlands
while allowing you to look closely for tadpoles and aquatic insects. The

Coos Bay is a long and circuitous estuary fed by the Coos River among other tributaries; it's considered the best natural harbor between San Francisco and the Puget Sound. The bay's vast acreage gives anglers plenty of elbow room as they pursue fall chinook (July through October), coho (silver) salmon (October and November) and winter steelhead (December through March). Coos Bay also offers excellent canoeing opportunities through the South Slough Estuarine Reserve, the first federally designated reserve of its kind. Here, you can glide by oystercatchers, egrets, herons, and other birds as they stalk the estuary’s mudflats. All services are available in the towns of Coos Bay, Charleston and North Bend.

The campground is nestled among shore pines and well protected from the strong ocean breezes. Besides three loops of campsites, the park boasts thirteen yurts, making year round camping a very popular choice. The horse camp features easy access to the beach and dunes for equestrian campers.

Well known for excellent fishing and crabbing opportunities on the Coquille River, the boat launch facilities are well-used during the summer and fall seasons.

From the registration booth in the campground, take a stroll on a meandering paved pathway to the beach (a little more than a mile). The path weaves through the open grassy fields and lowland forest across a plain to the sandy dunes. All along the path are views of the beautiful Coquille River, usually dotted with colorful boats and kayaks. Across the river is Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, sporting a variety of resident and migrating wildlife. Be sure to bring your binoculars!

The historic Coquille River Lighthouse is located at the end of the beach access road in the park. It's staffed from May thru October with park volunteers who interpret the history of the area and lead tours to the lantern room. From this point, there are 4.5 miles of open beach to explore. Bring your mountain bike to ride along the hard-packed sand along the edge of the surf or just enjoy a leisurely stroll on along the ocean shore. The park also has a 7-mile equestrian trail.

There's more nearby. Across the river is Bandon by the Sea. Visit a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants in the town that is called "The Cranberry Capital of the World" as well as the "The Storm Watching Capital of the World." Learn the legend of Face Rock and access miles of shoreline at our day use State Parks on Beach Loop Drive. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was conceived and executed in harmony with the natural environment on Oregon's rugged South Coast. The resort features two distinctly different courses, both built on a beautiful stretch of sand dunes perched 100 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The terrain is strikingly similar to the stretch of Scotland's coastline where the game of golf was born. Between them, the two courses feature a dozen holes that run along the bluff overlooking 23 miles of sweeping, undisturbed shoreline. # While conveniently located near Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes is remarkably different in character and shot making requirements. Designed by Tom Doak, Pacific Dunes emerges from Shore Pines to spectacular sixty-foot dunes blanketed in grasses and native vegetation. Green complexes are smaller, with greater undulation, requiring precise approaches. Like Bandon, the course is designed for walkers only and use of the resort's professional caddies is encouraged. # Our lodge is the center of activity at the resort, and features spa facilities, and sports lounge, a complete Pro Shop and an outstanding restaurant, serving fresh Pacific Northwest cuisine and the finest cuts of choice beef this side of Kansas City. # Lodge offers 15 single rooms, four larger singles, and two deluxe suites, many with dramatic golf course views, others with quiet lake and forest vistas. Nearby, four 12-room cottages overlook the Lily Pond and woods. # In Spring of 2002, Bandon Dunes is adding 84 new rooms to our list of first class accomodations. Just a few hundred yards Northeast of the lodge, on the banks of Chrome Lake, are 21 new buildings, each with two tastefully spacious rooms downstairs and a two bedroom suite upstairs -- all perfectly suited for a foursome. # WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING: "Probably the finest land made available for a golf course in America since Alistar MacKenzie was shown the site for the Cypress Point Club on the Monterey Peninsula." - Golf Magazine In 2001, Golf Magazine ranked Pacific Dunes #17 and Bandon Dunes #11 on their list of the top 100 Courses in the U.S. On their list of the Top 100 in the World, Pacific Dunes was ranked #26 and Bandon Dunes #70. "It won't be long before Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes, given their public accessibility, unspoiled environment, dramatic setting, thoughtful design and true golf spirit are considered the best tandom of courses in the world." -- Jaime Diaz, Senior Writer, Golf Digest "Pacific Dunes...emerges as perhaps the last great meeting of sand and sea on American soil." -- Ron Whitten, Architecture Editor, Golf Digest Named Best New Upscale Public Course by Golf Digest.
